Māyā's Story

Maya Zen

Hey, I am Māyā - an Indo-Australian self-taught artist, a yogi and a food lover. Thank you for taking this time to know a little more about me.

Before rediscovering my passion for art, I did the full nine yards of Engineering, then MBA and a decade-long stint in the corporate world, jumping from one job to another in search of fulfilment and a little excitement.

After the birth of our son in 2016, me and my husband realised that we were just too consumed with the daily grind and were missing out on family time. Motivated by the desire for a more balanced lifestyle, my family and I made the bold decision to relocate to Australia in 2020.

We had no family or friends here but there was Covid to give company. Savings were depleting, times were getting scarier, and the job market was non-existent.

That's when I reconnected with my passion for painting (after school) and there was just no looking back!

I painted for hours!!! It filled that void in my heart and I found peace in colours and Mandalas. Painting has always brought a sense of Zen in me and I aim to capture that energy and present it on canvas in a contemporary style.

Creating unique art and highlighting the power of contrast is what drives me. I want everyone to look at my paintings and be instantly transported to their Zen moment.

I wanted to share this joy with everyone and make art more accessible. This inspired me to establish PAINTELAIDE in 2021, an art studio, with my husband who completes me and the business with his marketing superpowers! A place where wine meets paintbrush, and strangers leave as friends, bonded by the shared experience of making art.

We have travelled across South Australia, have hosted more than 700 art workshops and painted with more than 15000 people.

I am grateful to now have a lovely team working with me, which gives me more time to paint for myself and colour my inspirations and experiences.

When I am not painting, I spend time with my family, planning our next trip or our next food experience.

I feel my journey till now can be best summarised as : "Be a fish in the sea and a bird in the sky", my first ever painting!

This fish did adapt to fly in a new sky :)
